Renewing your Winter Skin

Winter can get cold, bleak and not always great for the mood, but with a bit of know-how the cold months can be the perfect time to renew and rejuvenate skin. Here’s how to make the most of winter.

Get more Zzzs: We tend to get more bedtime hours in during winter and that means added time for skin to rebuild and replenish itself. If you’re a night owl all year round, try curbing your after-dark fun and get to bed an hour earlier – your skin will thank you even if your friends don’t.

Eat more good fats:
Hearty meals are called for during winter and loading up on good unsaturated fats will pay dividends to your skin too. Think oily fish, olive oil, nuts and avocado.

Up the exfoliation: regular exfoliation doses skin with nutrients, boosts cell turnover and helps creams and serums more efficiently. So during winter, when skin can suffer dryness, make sure you up the exfoliation. A gentle scrub used every second day after cleansing will get skin glowing despite the cold. Our picks this winter are Gaia Facial Exfoliant and Miessence Garnet Exfoliant for its gentle jojoba bead formulation.

Keep well tone: No, not your body (although you may want to do that too), your face. Toners help restore skin pH balance and keep things on an even keel (exactly what you want during times of unpredictable weather). During winter a brightening toner, such as Miessence Probiotic Skin Brightener, which uses a mild lactic acid to keep skin glowing no matter what the season.

Dose up on oil: Keeping the diet rich in Omegas is important but smoothing in facial oils is also key in keeping skin healthy. Facial oils and serums are able to sink deeply and quickly into the skin making them ideal for renewing a lackluster complexion. Rosehip Oil is a firm favourite amongst skin experts for its rejuvenating, scar-reducing and rebalancing capabilities – Lily Loves Pearl Repair Me Certified Organic Rosehip Oil is certified organic and perfect for the job. Or go for a power blend such as Miessence Rejuvenessence Facial Serum, which boasts organic rosehip seed, avocado, jojoba, calendula and carrot oils to revitalise and boost tired, stressed-out skin. Pat a few drops into skin at night or mix with your regular night cream for extra nourishment.

Protect: Sure it’s cold outside but that doesn’t mean you can skip the SPF – it’s essential for keeping skin looking fresh and young. We rate Mukti Tinted Moisturiser with Sunscreen. It offers good moisture, a hint of tint and SPF15 (minus the nasties often found in regular sunscreen) making it perfect for daily use.
